Introduction To NY Courses
According to New York City Local Law 196, workers and supervisors at the majority of construction across NYC need to have an SST card. They can earn this card by completing 40-62 hours of Site Safety Training (SST) courses. Beyond this, they must also complete 8-16 hours of refresher training every 5 years. This standard still applies as of July 2024.
New entrants in the construction industry must complete 10-hour OSHA training before starting at worksites. In the next six months, they must perform 30 more hours of SST courses to earn their SST NYC card.
Get A 40-Hour SST Card
You can earn a 40-hour Site Safety Training (SST) NYC Card by completing the OSHA 10-Construction course along with 30 hours of SST courses such as 8-Hour Site Safety Manager Refresher, 8-Hour Fall Prevention, along with 14 hours worth of short courses such as 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness and others.
If you have completed OSHA 30-Hour Construction training, you can simply complete 8-Hour Fall Prevention and 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness courses to earn your SST 40-hour card. Note that this option isn’t for workers who started in the industry after December 1, 2019. Workers who have entered the construction industry after this date must complete OSHA 10-Hour Construction before starting their careers and then complete 30 hours of SST courses within the next six months.

Training For Workers And Supervisors
Workers need 40 hours of training for an NYC SST card while supervisors must complete 62 hours of training. The New York Department of Buildings (DOB) requires supervisors to finish 12 SST (combined 32 hours) courses along with OSHA 30-Construction. This qualifies them to establish a safe work environment during construction projects and oversee the safety procedures at worksites. Workers, on the other hand, only need to complete 40 hours of training to earn their SST Card in NYC.
How To Earn Your NYC DOB SST Card
To get an SST Training Card in NYC, you must submit the following documents before, during or after your training completes.

Your height and eye color (required for your SST card)

A valid ID (NYS driver’s license or IDNYC card; proof of address not required)

A valid OSHA 30 Card (both sides, issued within the last 5 years)

For out-of-state driver’s license, passport, or consular ID, proof of address is needed (e.g., utility bill, bank statement, insurance statement, cell phone bill, hospital letter, apartment lease, etc., with your name and address and not older than 30 or 60 days)

A clear picture of yourself (taken with your cell phone, with good lighting, on a white background, no shadows, no hat, no glasses, no jacket)
